History
The inn's story begins in 1832 when it was originally built as a home for General Francis Preston and his family of 11, before being established as the Martha Washington College (one of the first schools in the United States to offer higher education to women). Founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, the college provided women with an exceptional education for over 70 years.
In 1932, the college ceased operations, and the property underwent a transformation. It was converted into a hotel and aptly named The Martha Washington Inn, in honor of the country's first First Lady, Martha Washington. The inn quickly gained a reputation for its Southern hospitality and timeless elegance.
Over the years, The Martha has welcomed many notable guests, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Elizabeth Taylor. Its historical significance and charming ambiance have made it a popular destination for both leisure travelers and those seeking a unique backdrop for special events.
