Grayson Highlands State Park

Grayson Highlands State Park protects more than 4,000 acres above 5,000 feet, with balds, rhododendron tunnels, and famously photogenic wild ponies. Multiple trailheads connect to the Appalachian Trail and longer ridge routes.

The park is near Mouth of Wilson, roughly an hour’s drive from Abingdon depending on route—ideal for a full-day outing. Fees, campground status, and trail conditions are posted on the official Virginia State Parks site.

Give ponies space, pack layers (weather changes quickly at elevation), and download or screenshot a map before you lose signal.
