The Channels Natural Area Preserve
The Channels is a 721-acre natural area preserve known for a maze-like system of narrow sandstone crevices near the summit of Middle Knob. Trails pass through high-elevation forest typical of the Clinch Mountain ridge.
Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation emphasizes limited parking (on-site capacity is small) and prohibits roadside parking on Highway 80—violations may be ticketed. Plan a weekday or off-peak arrival when possible.
The preserve is a moderate drive from Abingdon; wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and check DCR alerts for weather or fire closures.
